'Imagine early 1920s Jarrow. Not long after losing your husband, father, son, brother to WW1. Looking up at the newly erected Palmer Cenotaph and looking for their names only to find not one of them added? Would you have thought ‘Why is my family missing?’ Especially like some widows who lost husbands and brothers and not one was recorded on that Cenotaph? And for most of them, the only information they had received from the War Office was ‘killed in action’ ‘missing presumed dead’ ‘of no known grave’ ‘Commemorated Belgium/France’ Which might as well of been the dark side of the moon in them days for the cost of getting there. Those wretched poor souls never mourned their husband, father, son, brothers passing................. Imagine if the Palmer Cenotaph had of included all those who died from Jarrow in WW1 (It holds 185 names 145 on 3 faces, rest on additional brass plaques) And there were at least 809 Servicemen who died in WW1 from Jarrow It would have, had to have been 5 times the size of the present Cenotaph And imagine if it held all the names of those killed in WW1 and WW2 from Jarrow. (There were about 1176 servicemen/women and civilians that died in WW1 and WW2) It would have, had to have been 8 times the size of the present Cenotaph (about the size of Jarrow Town Hall) For nearly a Century some have not been remembered when we were told' ‘We Will Remember Them’ Researched by Vin Mullen (2000 - 2008) email: nor.d@hotmail.co.uk |
